MOT-news special edition: continuation of ID-DOC

With the support of the Province of Flemish-Brabant, the MOT has started the next phase of the ID-DOC project. ID-DOC, an identification aid for technical items on the MOT website is being extended to include additional information on woodworking tools and an extra project worker has been taken on for this. Would you like to know more about the ID-DOC data file? Click below for an article on the set-up and aims of this project. This contribution also appeared in the most recent issue of the magazine "Oost-Vlaamse Zanten". Since the article is in Dutch we give you a short summary of it in English.

IDENTIFYING TECHNOLOGICAL OBJECTS - HOW ID-DOC CAN HELP

Johan David and Marijke Wienen

Before technological objects in a collection can be used by a historian or a museum worker, they need to be inventoried. This demands identification, naming and documentation of the objects in question, which is a difficult task, as there are often few or no means at hand to work systematically. A prototype of ID-DOC on the internet proposes a solution. The shape of the object is often the only lead you have to find out more about it and this is the reason why ID-DOC is a means for the identification of technological objects based on pictures of them, ordened in different morphological categories. You can test the prototype on www.mot.be
