There was a very old bakehouse in Canterbury which was mentioned in Domesday (1086) and documents existed about its conversion to coal firing in the reign of Elizabeth the first of England. It was still working in the 1970s under the control of a 65 year old baker, assisted by his mother!! I have eaten bread baked in it. I believe that it was closed down by the hygene people because of the chance of coal ash coming in contact with the bread. There was an item about it on the television while it was still working.
